The Menu Says translates a French menu to English offline app for iPhone and iPad
Developer: Creekcats LLC
First release : 04 Jun 2016
App size: 15.29 Mb
The Menu Says translates a menu from French to English with or without an internet connection.
Order easily from a French-language menu. Take a photo, crop as needed, and hit "Translate." Thats it! Each line of English is in bold text immediately below the line of French, so you can point to your choice.
The Internet is not needed to use the app, but you do need a connection to buy it, so be sure you buy before you travel.
Free Trial.
Try it 3 times free. You can do several translations with a single trial. As long as you dont quit the app, additional translations dont count against you. Try several pages of a single menu, for example.
Or, if you dont have an French-language menu handy for testing, you can test the app on real menu photos that are included. This will not count against your free trials. (A photo of a menu from a computer screen will not work).
Rent or Buy.
Choose to rent for a week for $.99 or buy for $2.99 for unlimited use.
Why Choose The Menu Says?
- Menu phrases were professionally translated (not by machine), so the translation is far superior to other menu translation apps.
- It works well on most printed menus.
- It is not just a word translator. Each line of the menu is followed by its translation, so when you find what you want to order you can point to it on the menu.
- It works the same offline or online so it works anywhere: in a train, on a plane. Anywhere.
- It has a very simple interface so you can use it easily the first time, and you wont need to re-learn it if you dont use it for weeks or months.
- The translation is in bold, easy-to-read type.
Other Helpful Features
- You can use the "flashlight" button to take a photo in low-light conditions.
- Results are saved and you can easily go back and forth through them. Theres no need to re-photograph and re-translate pages of a multi-page menu.
- If you have an Internet connection, you can share results by email or Facebook.
- You do not need to download a dictionary or data pack in order to use it.
INSTRUCTIONS AND TIPS
- The app works on printed menus; it won’t work on handwriting or on a computer screen photo.
- For best results, lay the menu flat on the table to take the photo.
- Face the camera straight at the menu, not at an angle.
- Crop the photo to a single column of the menu.
- If the results are bad, try taking a photo from closer or farther away. This can help if the app has trouble reading the text.
KNOWN ISSUES
- On most menus, the app cant read a few words here and there. Dont expect perfection.
- Translation is hard: the grammar will often be imperfect.
- The app has trouble reading some fonts.
- The app often doesnt recognize "&", reading it as 8 or as something else.
- The app can be confused by some graphics, including lines of dots (....), so that some words are missed.
